Even those who are new to classical music itself will find much to appreciate and relate to here. The “continuo” so common in baroque music, for example, is the series of chords in the bass part, very much like the “walking bass line” of a jazz piece. Modern ears will also recognize Vivaldi’s ostinato basso — a simple, continuously repeating musical phrase throughout a more complex piece — as the historical predecessor to the compelling “hooks” found in hip-hop/rap music. Careful listeners will hear many wonderful surprises enlivening Vivaldi’s continuo.
